Airport Transfers With a Bike|Taxi, Shuttle, MRT or Support Vehicle

By · Updated

Land at Taoyuan International Airport with a bike and there are roughly four ways out of the terminal. You can take a taxi from the rank or book one, use a regular airport shuttle service, ride the Airport MRT and change to Taiwan Railway if needed, or book a bike support vehicle (also called a support van or SAG). They differ a lot on whether an assembled bike fits, whether a bike box fits, and how many people make each one worth it, and some of the rules are not published anywhere. This guide puts the differences in one table first, then goes through which rules are officially published and which you need to ask about in advance. Taichung, Kaohsiung and Songshan airports work differently, and each gets a short section at the end.

The Four Options in One Table

The table is based on what was publicly available in October 2026. Taxis and shuttle services publish no rules on carrying bikes, so the table says so.

Ask Taxis and Shuttle Services Yourself

The taxi rank at Taoyuan Airport and the common airport shuttle services do not publish any rules on bikes or bike boxes. Whether they will take one, and whether there is an extra charge, is not something we could find, so we do not fill it in for them. The table simply says not published. If you plan to use one, call ahead or write it clearly on the booking.

What usually goes wrong is space. A bike box often will not fit in the trunk of an ordinary sedan, so say up front that you have a bike box, and how many, and ask for a larger vehicle such as an SUV or a nine-seater. That is much easier to sort out than finding out at the terminal. At the taxi rank you generally get whichever car is next, so if you have a bike box, be ready for it not to fit.

The Airport MRT Takes Whole Bikes, Within Set Hours and Doors

Since 10 March 2026 the Taoyuan Airport MRT has allowed bikes at every station on the line, including the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 stations. Assembled bikes can only ride regular trains, not express trains, and only through doors 1-1 and 1-2 on the first car and doors 4-2 and 4-3 on the fourth car. Each door area holds up to 2 bikes, 8 per train.

On working days the windows are only 10am to 4pm and 10pm to closing. Weekends and holidays are open all day. The bike must fit within 180 cm long, 120 cm high and 70 cm wide, and you walk it via stairs or lifts, never escalators. The fare is the normal distance fare plus NT$50, and that ticket already counts as a discounted fare, so no other discounts stack on it.

A bike taken apart and packed so the longest side is within 165 cm and the three sides add up to no more than 220 cm travels free as ordinary luggage, with no time window and no surcharge. If your flight lands on a working-day morning or early evening, packing the bike at the terminal is worth considering. Terminal layout and meeting points are in the Taoyuan Airport guide.

Changing to Taiwan Railway Means a Bike Bag, or Limited Bike-With-Rider Stations

If you ride the MRT to Taipei Main Station and change to Taiwan Railway heading south or east, the simplest way is a bike bag. Taiwan Railway requires the bike to be fully inside the bag, no longer than 150 cm and no more than 220 cm in total dimensions, and then it can go on every train. The Airport MRT luggage limit is 165 cm on the longest side, which is looser, so if you are changing all the way through, pack to the railway’s 150 cm.

If you would rather not take the bike apart, there is bike-with-rider service, where the whole bike rides in the same car as you. It is only available at some stations and each train has a limited number of bike spaces, so check availability before you set out. Taiwan Railway’s bike train pages state that the bike ticket is half the full fare.

When You Do Not Need a Support Vehicle

One or two people with one or two bikes, landing inside the MRT bike window, will spend least on the Airport MRT, bagging the bike for Taiwan Railway if heading south or east. A support vehicle is priced per vehicle, so with few people each person pays more.

If you are willing to pack the bike at the terminal, the MRT has no time limits at all and your options open up. If you are only going into Taipei or Taoyuan city with light luggage, you probably do not need a support vehicle either.

Groups, Many Bikes or Bad Timing Suit a Support Vehicle

With three or more people, several bikes, or bike boxes and large luggage, the MRT means splitting up, taking bikes apart or waiting for a window. If your flight lands on a working day outside the MRT bike hours, or late at night and you want to go straight to your start point, a support vehicle is the smoother choice. The driver meets you at the terminal exit and takes everyone, every bike and the luggage in one trip.

Airport one-way transfers start from NT$2,000. How night, holiday and extra-bike charges work is on the rates page. When you book, tell us your flight, group size, number of bikes and number of bike boxes, and we will arrange the vehicle around that. One vehicle carries up to 8 riders and 8 bikes per trip, and larger groups can be split across vehicles.

Taichung, Kaohsiung and Songshan Work Differently

Taichung Airport has no airport MRT, but buses run direct, including a Taiwan Tourist Shuttle route to Sun Moon Lake. It is closer to Sun Moon Lake and Wuling than Taoyuan is, and the routes and terminal details are in the Taichung Airport guide.

Kaohsiung Airport has Red Line station R4 connected straight to the terminal, and the metro takes bikes, with time and station limits. It is the closest airport for routes toward Kenting and Dapeng Bay, and the bike rules are in the Kaohsiung Airport guide.

At Songshan Airport the Wenhu Line does not take unfolded whole bikes. Only folded or packed bikes go, free and at any hour, the opposite of the Taoyuan Airport MRT. The Keelung River bike path runs right beside the airport, and the details are in the Songshan Airport guide. All four airport guides are listed under related guides at the end.

FAQ

Can a taxi at Taoyuan Airport take a bike box?

There is no published rule, so ask in advance. A bike box often will not fit in a sedan trunk, so state how many boxes you have and ask for a larger vehicle when you book.

I am travelling alone with one bike. Do I need a support vehicle?

Usually not. If you land inside the MRT bike window, take the whole bike on the Airport MRT, or pack it and carry it free as luggage, then change to Taiwan Railway if heading south. It costs less than a support vehicle.
